A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
