European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
